For my first workshop of the year, we’re leaning fully into that practice with relaxing, meditative patterns that help build skill and create space to breathe.

No pressure. Gentle guidance. A moment to honor the quiet of winter.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, this class is for you. It’s less about perfect technique and more about mental rest.

Even though I bring my TV to workshops to show my lesson on a larger screen, I also try my best to work the room, answering questions and demonstrating up close so everyone feels like an active participant rather than an audience member. This past year of teaching has taught me so much, and I’m genuinely excited to keep learning and leveling up these workshops alongside you all! 👩🏻‍🎨✨

Got to deliver this big boy today! ✨ I created this piece for a live demo during the annual CBIZ Plaza Art Fair Party, then brought it back to the studio for some finishing touches. It’s the largest piece I’ve ever painted, and sharing the process with the community made it even more special. ♥️

Such an exciting day in the studio! My first loot from Sustainable Paper + Craft arrived on my doorstep this morning, and it’s everything I’d hoped for.

I first knew of Kelsey’s handmade papers when I met @janellabeestudio at a fair several years ago. Janelle uses handmade paper for all of her stunning lino prints. I have several of her pieces around my home, and she is without a doubt my favorite local artist. (Many of you have been gifted Sage Moon and Warrior Mother prints from me, printed by Janelle on paper crafted by Kelsey!)

Last year, I got to meet Kelsey when we were both featured artists at the KC Art Institute for a chamber of commerce holiday market. Of course in my Sarah way, I barely introduced myself and mostly ogled from afar 🫠

All this time, I have dreamt of making art with her paper. Before I worked as an artist professionally, before I even considered myself an artist. There’s just something about handmade paper that calls to my lil heart. Maybe it’s the memory of making paper with my mom as a little girl, maybe it’s just the love it was made with that makes it special, maybe it’s just paper and I have a flair for the dramatics 🤫

It wasn’t until this summer, when I started learning watercolors, that I finally had a project worthy of her work.

I reached out for a mystery box of sorts - a loot of imperfect papers of various sizes and colors (suitable for watercolor). The organic, imperfect textures and rough edges are magic to me! These would-be cotton rag scraps will find new life as canvases for my Fall collections. I cannot wait to share this work with you all!

My next goal will be investing in a fine art printer, so I can use handmade paper for my giclee archival prints, too 📜🖤

This afternoon, I registered for the STEMS Plein Air Paint - artists have a whole month to paint; selected pieces win prizes and are displayed in gallery shows. There are also two Quick Paint challenges, and one happened to be TONIGHT.

So, I flipped a coin and decided to go for it with about an hour to get packed up and drive out to the arboretum. I was buzzing with nerves on my way there, certain I’d make a fool of myself, but excited for the challenge.

I brought a TV tray and a tote bag in lieu of a traditional pochade box that the veteran artists all had in tow. My bag broke a few steps into my race for a spot, which meant I would need to stay closer than I’d hoped. I found a quiet spot by a small pond and set up - with shaky hands and a messyyy dump bag 🫠

As the first hour came and went, the sun beat down on me and backlit my view, making it hard to see but even harder to paint consistent lighting. What I had hoped to be the perfect golden hour spot turned out to be another lesson.

Throughout the second hour, I was certain I was gonna be taking an L. There was no hope for a finished piece. My perspective was off, my shadows were constantly moving, and I didn’t have time for the details that would make the difference.

Closing in on the last five minutes, I threw color where I could and let go of any plan. I was SWEATING. I haphazardly “packed” the broken dump bag, tucked the TV tray under my arm, and precariously balanced the painting between hands. It was at that moment, I thought…”let’s just walk out. Don’t even stop at the judging station. You can just go home and be happy you tried!”

But I was guided to the table and greeted with a big smile, when I reluctantly handed over my entry. I was pleasantly surprised by the messy, expressive pieces laid out. My painting was imperfect, but it was at home in the lineup. I didn’t look like a fool; I looked like an artist.

As we all explored the tables and wrapped up the night, I noticed artists huddling around my piece, looping back to take photos. I could’ve cried I was so proud of myself. Today was a good day and one worth remembering with a silly little (too long) post.

As the first hour came and went, the sun beat down on me and backlit my view, making it hard to see but even harder to paint consistent lighting. What I had hoped to be the perfect golden hour spot turned out to be another lesson.

Throughout the second hour, I was certain I was gonna be taking an L. There was no hope for a finished piece. My perspective was off, my shadows were constantly moving, and I didn’t have time for the details that would make the difference.

Closing in on the last five minutes, I threw color where I could and let go of any plan. I was SWEATING. I haphazardly “packed” the broken dump bag, tucked the TV tray under my arm, and precariously balanced the painting between hands. It was at that moment, I thought…”let’s just walk out. Don’t even stop at the judging station. You can just go home and be happy you tried!”

But I was guided to the table and greeted with a big smile, when I reluctantly handed over my entry. I was pleasantly surprised by the messy, expressive pieces laid out. My painting was imperfect, but it was at home in the lineup. I didn’t look like a fool; I looked like an artist.

As we all explored the tables and wrapped up the night, I noticed artists huddling around my piece, looping back to take photos. I could’ve cried I was so proud of myself. Today was a good day and one worth remembering with a silly little (too long) post.
