World Watercolor Month - Day 29 - Negative Painting Full Moon

Welcome to Day 29 of World Watercolor Month, artists! Today, we are revisiting negative painting and celebrating the full buck moon.

Check out examples & video references below, as well as today's journal questions and mantras!

Use a bottle cap, baby food jar, or any other traceable circular item to outline a circle in the center (or wherever you want to place your moon) of your paper. Layer cool tone colors around the circle to create a deep night sky. I recommend a payne's grey, which can be used to create beautiful layers of a deep grey-blue. The further your work away from the moon, the deeper the colors should get, creating a glow effect. If you want more of a "galaxy" look, try adding in purples.

You can keep the moon completely white or - after allowing the sky to dry - you can use various pale shades of grey to stipple in the illusion of craters. Really dilute your pigments for this, we want to keep the moon as bright as possible. I recommend a white-on-wet technique (see second video reference) for a simple and effective illusion here.

If you want the moon to be a more glowing warm tone, you can also very lightly layer over a wash of pale yellow.

White (or metallic) acrylic markers or gouache can be used for stars as a final touch. Just use the very tip of your brush to paint in a few dots here and there to give the illusion of constellations!
