Welcome to Day 28 of World Watercolor Month, friends! Today, we are back to sketching! We will sketch large monstera leaves and watercolor them using a very simple color palette. You could even use one singular paint color, if you really want to challenge yourself! This exercise will help you practice how to work with value, adding depth and dimension to a monochromatic subject. Monstera leaves are seemingly simple in shape and color, but these guys can be a little tricky. It is often these types of "simple" sketches that teach us the most!
Check out examples & video references below, as well as today's journal questions and mantras!
Use a drawing pencil to sketch loose heart shape leaves with holes and splits (fenestrations). Working light to dark, paint a wash of light green over the leaves, then add deeper tones along the stem and edges to create the illusion of depth.
